Nextcloud Hackweek – Day 1- People, Cloud, Vision, Documentation, Pizza, Beer

Yesterday I started my trip to Germany for attending the hackweek at Nextcloud headquarters in Stuttgart. The photo on top is taken where I started from. As you can imagine one has to be really motivated and curious to leave a place like this ;)
I arrived on time today in the morning, my phone noticed the right SSID but I didn’t found the entrance to the office.

Where is the Nextcloud hackweek?

Luckily I was not the only one (@oparoz was lost too) and finally @nickvergessen picked us up.

Buero

The day started with a discussion about the agenda.
At 11am we had a kind of plan:

Schedule Stuttgart August 2016
Schedule Stuttgart August 2016

As often at events like this WiFi wasn’t working. Same here, if more than 10 people tried to connect. Finally we found a few cables and adapters to provide everyone with internet.

Bjoern and Lukas played around with the theming feature …

Frank talked about the vision, goals and idea of the Nextcloud company. That’s the vision:

Furthermore, the goal is to make the world a better place. It sounds initially maybe a bit old fashioned, but in my opinion it is a very nice goal!

I was then researching what I could do and joined Andreas, Philip and Daniel on a talk about Nextcloud Partner models. After that I decided to help out with missing documentation.

Unfortunately, I’m not perfect with git commands. Julius helped me and I actually managed to commit a small documentation for anonymous uploading of files created (File Upload via Public Link).

I missed the discussion about the new planned features in the contact and calendar app (have to ask tomorrow).

Did you know that Jos has a dog named popcorn who is attending the hackweek too?

In the evening we had Pizza …

Pizza

… and finally a beer at Palast der Republik.

Palast der Republik

On the way back to the hotel I learn a lot about PokemonGo :)

#32c3

Between christmas cookies, marzipan , house renovation and usual life, I managed to watch #32c3 video streams from the chaos communication congress in Hamburg.

Here are a few talks I watched:

  • EN – Keynote: Fatuma Musa Afra
Einfach mal gucken (hier meine Gedanken dazu)
  • EN – Shopshifting – The potential for payment system abuse
Payment systems are old and have – unlike card protocols – seen little scrutiny so far. This talk enumerates design and implementation flaws in payment processing systems, which can defraud consumers and merchants.
  • EN – The exhaust emissions scandal („Dieselgate“)
Take a deep breath into pollution trickery.
Analysis of the emission scandal shaking the German automotive industry from a procedural, organizational and technical level. Includes insight into cheating for advanced managers and code extraction from ECUs from Ebay. And from Volkswagen. Initially.
  • EN – My Robot Will Crush You With Its Soft Delicate Hands!
How to design and fabricate soft robots using everyday materials. In this talk Matthew Borgatti, Lead Scientist at Super-Releaser, will take you through the process of turning a puddle of goo into a working soft robot. He will take you through the different mechanisms that can be created, simple processes for fabricating soft robots, and methods for joining elements together into sophisticated assemblies.
  • EN – Mahsa: Mobile Censorship in Iran
As Internet users increasingly connect to the Internet through smartphones, this has transformed Iran’s Internet ecology towards an increasing reliance and production in apps. In Iran, a country that practises some of the most stringent censorship and surveillance techniques in the world has seen this transformation reshape the way the government implements information controls online. While applications with popular usage on browsers such as Facebook and Twitter remain blocked through their mobile applications, platforms that predominantly exist in app form such as WhatsApp, Viber, and Instagram remain unblocked in the country. This talk will look at how the government is counteracting these policies through various means, including local imitation apps, and new programs such as ‘intelligent filtering’, and the Revolutionary Guards’ “Spider” program. Additionally, a discussion of how Iranian Internet users use these platforms, especially in reference to digital security awareness and practices will be included.
  • EN – taziden, Adrienne Charmet: One year of securitarian drift in France
Earlier this year, following the tragic events of early January in Paris, the French governement pushed a bill to put a legal framework around Intelligence Services activities. Far from protecting civil liberties, this bill seem to be the translation of Snowden’s revelations into law.
  • EN – Roland Bracewell Shoemaker: Let’s Encrypt — What launching a free CA looks like
Let’s Encrypt is a new free and automated certificate authority, that entered closed beta in October and has already issued a large number of valid certificates. This talk will provide a short overview of  how the Let’s Encrypt client and server software work, and explore
statistics gathered during our closed beta and launch period.
  • DE – Netanel Rubin: The Perl Jam 2
tl;dr EXPLOIT ALL THE PERL. AGAIN.
After last year’s Perl crackdown, I decided I have to take the Perl abuse to the next level. This time I focused on Perl’s core, or more specifically, the referencing mechanism, and shattered the security of most Perl CGI projects in the world.
  • EN – rop, frank: Ten years after ‚We Lost The War‘
The talk „We Lost The War“ was presented at Congress ten years ago, causing quite a stir. It was a prediction of a dark future that did not sit well with many people, but unfortunately many predictions have come true meanwhile. This talk will try to address what comes next, as well as what the hacker community can do to make things better.
  • EN – CAGE, Cerie Bullivant: The Price Of Dissent
CAGE exists to highlight abuses of the War on Terror. It has uncovered many secrets of governments that they would like to remain secret, and is now one of the most targeted organisations in the UK. Hear how the state attempts to suppress dissent, and yet we manage to speak out.

Bisher gefällt mir wirklich alles an diesem Telefon.

Ducks in clear water

Joomla – A Social Movement In Tech Industry?

It is simply amazing to talk to people from 5 continents over a few days. It’s even more amazing to do that in a place like Bangalore, India where the Joomla World Conference just took place (6-8 Nov 2015).

The Indian population stands for >17% of the worlds population. In Bangalore are living more people than in Denmark, about 8.4 million. Whole India is like a continent in itself, with 18 different official languages, plus English and Hindi as a kind of  language glue between the regions. If you are European and you are for the first time in India (like me), think of India as Europe. Each Indian region is like a country in Europe, own language, own culture. The only difference, compared to Europe, is, that it is two times bigger in any expectation you can think of and it’s growing fast.

It’s a difference just to read these figures in a magazine or this blog post compared to drive through a city like Bangalore in an auto rickshaw, which is a luxury in itself. You can see, smell and feel the gap between richer and poorer people and the lack of infrastructure very clear. Just let me mention one example. During the last days here in Bangalore there was/is a problem with the waste management. Huge piles of waste are everywhere (Bengaluru’s mounting garbage problem a burden on the city). Beside the waste, you see plenty of dogs and cows, that are everywhere looking for something to eat, even in a traffic jam. And now add heavy rain …

Keeping up with the Joomla project

The last three years I wasn’t really involved in the Joomla project, so I needed some guidance to keep up with all the stuff happened. I found Pete Bui’s Podcast and listened to a few episodes while traveling. I learned that a lot of things changed/happened and that there is now a volunteers portal and a new extension directory and a transition team and this, and that … and the best thing, I met Pete at the conference and he’s a nice guy!

How to make a living with Joomla?

In an environment like I described above, is “making a living” out of something hard. It’s hard everywhere in the world, I know, but here and in similar places it’s “a bit” harder, compared to Europe or the US.

The whole “money thing” was and is a problem for me too and probably for anyone of you. A journey from Europe to India costs a bit more than 1 000 Euro (~ 70 000 Rupees) and you just don’t go to events like this. Thinking about earning money, I decided to make a presentation on “How to earn money with Joomla” and asked people from the community how they do earn money with Joomla. It was a pleasure to have had Fred Abu (webstar.ug), Daniel (web-eau.net), Mike Demopoulos (mvpdesign.com sorry, I missed you :) ) and Lorenz Ramseyer (bergspitzmedia.ch) who talk a bit about their businesses. I guess it was interesting and inspiring for the attendees too.

Oh, a book on Joomla 3.5 just materialized

The feedback after the session was amazing and I got a sponsoring offer for a free downloadable book on the upcoming Joomla 3.5 from Hung Dinh (joom.vn). Hey wow, even though that was not the aim of the presentation, I am happy and I’ll write it :)

Hung Dinh immediately convinced Alex P’ng (123rf.com), Don Tian (eall.com.cn), Valentin Vesa (sucuri.net) and the people from siteground.com to join the project #asianefficiency #ilike

Joomla the community

As I knew Joomla, it was about a CMS and values like “open source matters”. In the last three years, it became more and more a real community too.

Therefore, the organisation of a Joomla World Conference in the year of Joomla’s 10. anniversary, was of course a good idea. Open Source Matters (OSM) provided budget to pay the travel costs for some attendees and for the OSM Team members (as far as I know). Many people understand the Joomla project as a kind of of social event, and it seems to work. This is more than fine and I’m very happy of being part of that too (even if I don’t like selfies :) ) For me the whole social stuff in the Joomla project is a bit new and I realized I need to learn some “new” ways of communication. From the social perspective, the Joomla World Conference was a huge success. I want to say thank you to the whole team for the perfect organisation!

Joomla the software

Without code there would be no Joomla Community and no Joomla websites at all. It seems to me, that it is now easier possible to contribute code, than it was three years before. There is also a new framework called FOF (Framework on Framework) in Joomla core. A lot of developers just gave up on the framework – platform – product discussion and wrote their own codebase, like most of the extension development companies. Some started to write even their own content management systems to keep up with what their clients wants to have, e.g Grav by Andi Miller (rockettheme.com) and Pagekit by Sascha Dube (Yootheme). Some are offering extensions like a page builder (joomshaper.com) and another page builder build the the team of joomlashine.com. I visited a few Joomla 4 discussions and I decided to document the Joomla 4 development process somehow. The whole new Joomla 4 structure is still not clear to me but sounds interesting. Marco Dings (viryagroup.com) told me, that his aim is to bring as many as possible of the new features and structures to the current and following 3.x releases to make the upgrade to Joomla 4 as easy as possible. Nevertheless, the new structure means a new “framework”. I attended a whole afternoon a discussion between Chris Davenport (davenporttechnology.com), Johan Janssens (joomlatools.com), Marco Dings, Henry Nguyen (joomlashine.com),  Sander Potjer (perfectwebteam.nl), Jisse Reimtsma (yireo.com), Mark Lee (stackideas.com) and a few others (please help me with the names in a comment). Just this discussion has paid off for me to fly to India. Johan, who is usually far ahead, wants to write good and well structured software. He said something like that to the members of the Joomla 4 architecture workgroup:

You are the change managers for something that runs 3% of the internet. The bigger the changes, the higher the rejections. The new structure looks interesting but it took me 7 years to implement something similar (Joomla in a box). A possible solution could be

–  do small steps in Joomla 3.6 like clean up the code, reduce the amount of frameworks in core. A new legacy mode plugin could be an idea for stuff that will not work anymore with Joomla 4

– code Joomla 4 parallel like Typo3 did with Neos. If people like it afterwards, integrate it in the next release (and call it 4)

and beside all of that … write code … it’s a software project!

This sounds quite logical to me and it makes me even more curious concerning the upcoming Joomla versions. Chris Davenport, the team lead for the Joomla 3.6 branch and Marco Dings responded to Johan, that they want to break as less as possible und put as much as possible into the upcoming 3.x versions.

The era of CMS

After 10 years with a big success for Joomla, WordPress, Drupal and all the other CMSs it becomes clear that this golden era is ending. All these systems are more or less abstraction layers on PHP that makes programming based on the PHP language easier. A Joomla developer knows the Joomla Framework, not necessarily the whole PHP stuff (same with WordPress and Drupal). We know the effect: PHP made programming easier compared to C language, C made programming easier compared to Assembler, etc. Drupal 8 is now implementing an abstraction layer on top of the Symfony Framework (which is an abstraction layer to PHP too) and it’s not clear to me whether it will work for them. Drupal coding will get much harder. They will probably get some new corporations on board but might also loose many developers. WordPress on the other side was always simple and they are constantly reducing the complexity of the core to a minimum and develop the system in small steps. WordPress is not build on Symfony, but it allows the use it. I know that Google trends is of course not the whole story and I don’t want to insist on particular figures, but when you see the reality today and what is shown in the diagram below, it becomes clear that each of these systems had it’s “CMS-Peak”. That doesn’t mean, that they are not interesting anymore, or you cannot make money with it.  Just the opposite is true.

Joomla, Drupal WordPress - Google Trends
Joomla, Drupal WordPress – Google Trends

When you look at the Gartner Hype Cycle, it’s quite clear too, that the trio is at the Plateau of Productivity since a few years. The definition of that plateau is the following

Mainstream adoption starts to take off. Criteria for assessing provider viability are more clearly defined. The technology’s broad market applicability and relevance are clearly paying off.

That means that there will be disruption in the future

A potential technology breakthrough kicks things off. Early proof-of-concept stories and media interest trigger significant publicity. Often no usable products exist and commercial viability is unproven.

Time for new ideas like Grav or Pagekit. When I asked Andy Miller whether he plans to do business with Grav, he smiled and said

It wasn’t planned, but why not, people ask me to do so.

more or less the same was told to me by Sascha Dube at Joomladay Germany concerning Pagekit.  Joomla project should be aware of these developments, learn from and embrace them.

The next “official” Joomla world conference

The next Joomla world conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada, Nov. 11-13. 2016 (https://conference.joomla.org/).

There is a Joomlabe.at podcast available from the conference team in 2014 to get an impression of them. Note to Pete … new podcast episode on your to do list (Ep71 – Joomla World Conference 2014 is Coming).

The next “other” international conference (Jandbeyond)

There is another international Joomla conference called Jandbeyond. It exists much longer than the world conference and it is a must to go for Joomla developers. Next Jandbeyond will be held in Barcelona, Spain, May 20-22 2016 (jandbeyond.org). Listen to the Joomlabe.at podcast with Robert Deutz, the organizer of that conference (Ep51 – Organising Joomla conferences with Robert Deutz). While writing this article, they just published their budget!

The Future

The future is hard to predict but the end of capitalism has begun and it’s time to develop new structures. This social experiment of Joomla could be part in that change over the next 10 years and I would like to be part of it.

And here are the selfies :)

Three more things

  1. I know, this is a WordPress Blog and cocoate.com is on Drupal (sorry for that, but hey, we can change it too :) )
  2. I have to approve the comments here and I might be in a plane for 10 hours …
  3. Sessions were recorded and you can watch them on YouTube (JWC15 Playlist)

@frau_rebis@publicscan@S_tef_unny@maxilamps
@hmoorlander@_auchich@schriftgutch@hirseweb
@RecumbentTravel@fugenpoet@hagengraf@irgendlink
@der_emil

Free/Libre/Freies WiFi in/à Fitou? EN, DE, FR

English: Freifunk (German for: “free radio/free wifi”) is a non-commercial open Grassroots initiative to support free radio networks. Freifunk is part of that international movement for open wireless radio networks. The initiative is based on the Picopeering Agreement. In this agreement participants agree upon a network that is free from discrimination, in the sense of net neutrality. The network can be used by anyone, without logging in. There is short video that explains how it works.

As you may know, I am author/writer and I offer my books for free here on that website in different languages (publications). I was curoius and downloaded the iBook Author app for playing around with it. It’s wonderful, perfect … I like it … and I will for sure use it to create a book. I already work with Pages. Pages is old, it is slow, but I like it. Unfortunately the files you produce with iBook Author are tied to the Apple platform. It is not allowed to offer them for free download on my website. I am only allowed to offer them in Apples iBookstore. In Cory Doctorows video I learned, that this idea of appliances is a bad idea. Hm … in general I agree with him … but if you are in a situation like me … why not trying it out?

May be later on an open source project will offer a similar authoring tool.

Nearly the same content that appears as in my printed books is already available in a much better shape here on the website in a free HTML version, with slideshare presentations and videos included and dowanloadable as PDF … ok, I have to think about that.

Kim Schmitz

In the middle of the nineties he was known quite well in Germany, he founded a company called Data Protect and sold it to a serious institution (TÜV Rheinland).

It was the time where the internet was “new” and people started to build “homepages”. There was a huge discussion between him and the CCC.

in German:

In 2001, he had problems with other companies he founded, with inside trading and got in legal trouble. The wikipedia article about him is growing and growing over the day … read it.

  • he seems to be a poser, a cheater and he likes luxury cars, parties and girls

… ok … sounds like someone who needs a therapy treatment … as many others …

He achieved early notoriety by being the subject of an advanced-for-its-time flash animation video called Kimble Special Agent (right mouse click on the blue box and click play)

Seems to me that the flash animations partly came true …

He’s a meme’s dream :)

Megaupload

Megaupload, the file-sharing service of the company, allowed all users to upload files to the service. After a successful file upload, the user was given a unique URL which allowed others to download the file.

The service was available in two flavors: basic and premium. The basic service was available for free and allowed users to upload files of up to two gigabytes. Free users could not download files larger than one gigabyte, however. Registered free users were offered 200 gigabytes of total file storage. Premium users had unlimited file storage – more on Wikipedia ¨

There are more of these kind of companies.

Today in the morning, when I was out for buying croissants and the baker told me, that the site isn’t fully down. He tried multiupload.com and it was possible for him to reach his files.

The baker told me that – in Fitou!

Seems that the service was quite popular :)

According to the FBI:

180,000,000 users, 13th mostfrequently visited website on the entire Internet, an average of 50 million daily visits, and to account for approximately four percent of the total traffic onthe Internet

MegaUpload Accounted for a Quarter of All Corporate Traffic—More than Dropbox

According Alexas 100 topsites: No. 72 website of the world and No 22 in France.

The Video

First watch it!

The fat guy in the middle (1:50) is Kim Schmitz. The other people are more or less simply stars (Will.i.am, P Diddy, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, Kim Kardashian, Lil John, The Game, Floyd Mayweather, Serena Williams, Ciara) .

There are two insteresting stories around this video:

While I am writing this blog post, the video was watched 50,000 times!

The Data – Where is it now?

megaupload.com stored nearly 25 PetaByte client data. Who has access to that data now?

Is is possible to do the same with Microsoft Azure Data, Amazon Cloud Data, Dropbox Data and other cloud stored data?

Anonymous

During the night and in the morning Anonymous supporters attacked the websites of the Department of Justice, the FBI and Universal Music Group, among others. The hacktivists used a technique called a Distributed Denial of Service to overload their targets with web traffic and effectively force them offline.

Difference The Pirate Bay and Megaupload

Megaupload charges it’s users, The Pirate Bay asks for donations. Big difference.

Questions to me

  • What was good and what was wrong with the business model of megaupload?
  • What is good and what is wrong with the business model of Universal?
  • What is good and what is wrong with the business model of Apple concerning iBook Author and iBookstore?
  • What could be a better business model for all of them?
  • Is there a way for Authors, Writer, Journalists to get paid for their work beside the old model?

WHAT A DAY/NIGHT :)

SOPA Strike

Cybercrime expert Mikko Hypponen talks us through three types of online attack on our privacy and data — and only two are considered crimes.

What does a bill like PIPA/SOPA mean to our shareable world? At the TED offices, Clay Shirky delivers a proper manifesto — a call to defend our freedom to create, discuss, link and share, rather than passively consume.
